I am ashamed to say that I did one of the greatest choke jobs of all time. It doesn't get much worse than this kids. I had a 3 shot lead - usually an insurmountable lead for Darko to overcome - heading into the 3rd and final day for the crown of "3 Day Champ." I started out by birdieing the first hole and took a commanding 5 shot lead with Darko's bogey on the same hole. Then the Golf gods began to humble me as I lost my 5 stroke lead with the next 7 holes - 3 shots coming off a disasterous triple bogey on a simple par 3 because I couldn't get it out of the beach. We were all tied up heading into the final 9 holes. I managed a 2 shot lead by the 16th hole and felt very comfortable down the stretch. Then came the fateful 18th and FINAL hole of the 3 day tourney. I heard my caddie say to me, keep it left because it's a disaster on the right. I took an overly aggressive line to the left because I was fading it all day. I pulled my drive hard left and hit a palm tree and ended up 20 yards in front of the tee. For my second shot, I had a difficult angle going diagonally across the fairway and over a bunker to set up for the approach shot which was over water. My caddie said you gotta take that line over the bunker so get all of it. I mishit my second shot in attempting to exert as much strength to get over the bunker. That shot hit ANOTHER tree because I pulled my ball again. UGH!!! What a disaster. I never hit a palm tree on any hole all week and on the final hole of the tourney, I managed to hit 2 palm trees and lost by one shot in the end. This was a Phil Mickelson from the US Open a couple years ago. This was worse than how Memphis lost last night. We both had it in the bag but we both lost it and now I'm the 3 day chump. I had to hear Darko reminde me that he's the 3 day champ all the way back to NYC from Jamaica. That's the pain I have to endure until the next tourney. Shoot me now!
