A weekend with mom

My mom was in town all weekend to hang with me. Well, not really but we did hang out all weekend together. She was in NY for her grandchild's birthday party. So I rented a BMW mini to get around town and run errands. I rented it because it's a cute car and compact, making it easy to get around Manhattan. What I failed to do (and always fail to do) was check the weather. I had no idea that it was supposed to snow/sleet on Sunday AM. Damn! BMWs are notorious for it's lack of handling in the snow because of it's rear wheel drive. Add crazy taxi drivers into the mix and it's not a good formula for driving around a BMW. I managed to survive as my mother continually urged me to drive slow everywhere. My mother is retired and it's both good and bad. She's relaxing (in theory), but it also means she has a lot of time. Which is the reason why I looked at condos all afternoon on Saturday. She set up a bunch of appointments to occupy our afternoon. Sounds great but I'm not in the market for a condo. I like my little (and humble) living arrangement in Chelsea. I'm renting and hope to continue renting. For the real estate agent that showed us all the different condos, I felt kinda bad because I know I'm not buying anything anytime soon. She kept putting a little pressure on me to buy, and I resisted with "I have to think about it." It was kind of fun looking at condos without the pressure of buying. The cheapest place I looked at was a $750,000 1BR (560 sq ft). The avg asking price for the 1BRs were about $950. When we looked at 2BRs, the asking price hovered around $1.5M. I'm so glad I'm not in the market. I like my rental even more.
