As the years pass, many friends of my youth are seen less and less unless they happen to be local to NYC. I was reminded of this reality when a handful of friends convened for some burgers at The Counter in Santa Monica. Someone mentioned that this burger joint is on Oprah's or GQ magazine's top something list of burger joints. I cannot verify that fact, but what I can verify is that it's one sloppy but pretty good burger. As I looked around the table, most of these faces I only get to see perhaps once a year, sometimes once every other year. All are from the east coast who left for better pastures out west. It's great to see friends and to reminisce about old times in Philly since that is where I first met everyone. It's great to see how everyone has progressed with their lives: jobs, relationships, marriages, etc. Though we're still relatively young, we do feel old because of all the ebbs and flow that we've ridden since graduation. Hopefully less ebbs than expected. And so here we were eating burgers in Santa Monica, and Helsinki -- who's in town for a wedding -- and I are the reason for getting old faces together at one place. Interestingly, these old faces who all live in Southern Cal rarely see each other. Since the 90s when I first met all these folks, life has taken us in so many unpredictable (and some predictable) directions. I can't say that I could've prognosticated any of their experiences. Hmmm, maybe Huge, who got married to the gal he had obsessed over since college. lol Life has many turns and the chapters continue to be written for each one of us. When I see these faces again someday, it'll be more chapters that I would've never predicted.
