If you haven't noticed, I've been watching a lot of movies because I have more time, no one's around in NYC and it's the holidays. So what do I watch on the eve of Christmas, but that holiday good feel movie of the year, Apocalypto. Oh man! Let me first say that it's actually a great movie and Mel did an extraordinary job. I wasn't in the mood to watch subtitles and blood gushing everywhere, but I will defer to the lady's choosing and she wanted to see Apocalypto.
The movie is the discovery or history channel on steroids, with a gruesome look into the Mayan culture. It was unnecessarily bloody and gruesome. I think Mel is an incredible director but I would describe his technique in this way: he likes to not only put salt in a wound, he wants to rub it in with a brillo pad. Mel, if you're reading my blog, I think you should mix in some of Alfred Hitchcock's techniques of not having to show actual knife penetration to get the same effect. Let the audience use their imagination, it's just as good.
I don't know much about the Mayan culture but I have a whole new view of those temples I used to run up and down in Mexico, or is that the Aztecs in Mexico? If you go watch the movie, that is if you can actually watch many of the bloody scenes, then be prepared to be stressed out of your mind. I had to decompress for an hour when I got home. Surprisingly, my friend enjoyed it though she watched only 75% of the movie. With all that said, it's a well made movie. I need to go back to the spa to get the knots out my back from watching this movie.

I managed to sit through the whole thing, but i can't say I enjoyed it ... The mountains of gore simply obliterated whatever point Mr. Gore may have been going for, and turned it into an even-more-violent-than-usual slasher flick, albeit with much better photography
