One of the awards at the luncheon was given to a songwriter whom I've never heard of before, but he's written a bunch of songs that would be very familiar to all of us. Unfortunately, they gave him this honor posthumously. Which begs the question, why did they wait so long to give it to him? Couldn't they have awarded the honor when he was still alive? Interestingly, he was instrumental in the development of the Four Tops and other R&B groups of the later half of the 20th century. After the acceptance speech by the honree's son, he introduced a surprise guest to conclude: The Four Tops. They sang a melody of his greatest hits, and for the many who were in that room, it was nostalgic because these are songs that are contemporary to them.
