I once visited the Greek isles. The food was delightful unlike tonight's dinner at a well regarded midtown Greek restaurant I shall not name. As usual, the average age of a midtown restaurant is hovering around 50 and I'm far south of that age. The food was alright and far from the flavorful dishes of what I had in Mykonos or Santorini. So unbeknownest to me, as dessert was being served, I hear the singing of "Happy Birthday" and the arrival of a birthday cake for me. Unfortunately, the rest of the dinner party didn't know that this was a joke and it really wasn't my birthday. Thanks Eric. Appreciate it.
After dinner, we hurried over to watch Avenue Q which was irreverent, foul, raw and simply hilarious. I'm amazed how entertaining a 7 person cast could be with puppets, which I would describe as Sesame Street meets the musical Rent. So good was the execution that your eyes became fixated on the puppets and not the adjacent puppeteers or actors. It was a satirical look at life in NYC, post-college which closely resembled themes from Rent: broken relationships, living poor, homosexuality and redemption. I think most people could relate to Avenue Q and not so much Rent. I'm not a musical critic nor do I ever sing show tunes in the shower or in the privacy of my home, but what I do like is entertainment and that was entertaining.
I won't get into why I entitled this entry Puppet Porn, but if you have ever watched the show, you'll understand.
