Tonight was a break from work dinners and other nightly events. I showed up to play ball down in the LES. I showed up 10 minutes late and we were down 12-0. Lets get right to the box score: 0 points (0-0 shooting), 0 turnovers, 3 assists and 0 fouls in 15 minutes. Our team is not that good because we haven't practiced or played enough with each other. We have talent; in fact, more talent than the other team. We don't understand the concept of passing nor defense. Our ball possession is no longer than 10 seconds and the other team spends the full 24 seconds, passing the ball, setting up picks and getting open shots. I told the team, let's play zone because we're having trouble with all the picks and their getting open shots. That idea was shot down. So I said in the second time out, let's pass the ball around more. Passing must've gotten lost in memory when the whistle blew to start the second half. The good thing about our team is the good natured people we have so there's no finger pointing. Everyone is out to have some fun. I feel like we're a 4th grade soccer team where everyone gets to play and it doesn't matter if we win or lose. I say WIN! Win baby win!
I played the point bringing the ball up and every time I approached half court, my defender would press me and I would dribble by him and he would read the back of my shirt, number 22. The best thing about playing in a corporate league is that guys are usually out of shape so it's really a matter of having legs. I'm no Steve Nash, but I can run circles around my defender and I can keep up and prevent any passes from being thrown into the guy I'm defending, therefore making it a 4 on 4 game. I am disappointed with the zero fouls. I enjoy administering a hard, on the border flagrant foul. So midway through the half, I was replaced by the only black guy on our team and I'm guessing because of his skin color, they backed off on pressing at half court. Very curious. I will say that I don't think my sub had better ball skills, but he sure had the look of a playa with baggy shorts and a low dribble. I will be purchasing XXL shorts tomorrow and be wearing them low, so that my boxers show and you can't see my shins. I may even purchase the Iverson arm sock -- black of course -- and wear it on only one arm. I could also employ the Kyle Korver high socks. Maybe a better look may get me more shots in the next game.
