After the Rocky V debacle, Sly Stallone's "basement" (AKA gut) was unsettled. The movie Rocky Balboa is the way Sly wanted to bring closure to the Rocky franchise. It's hard to find another fictional character that has been so closely identified with a city that you forget that it's not based on anyone from Philly. The story arc is predictable and formulaic, but its aim was not to garner Oscar nods. It was a vehicle to let Sly share a little bit of his wisdom.
Interestingly, I've crossed paths with 4 people who were in the movie.
Burt Young (Paulie) - When I lived in the Upper East Side, Burt Young lived a couple blocks away on 95th and Madison. I believe he still lives there. My old roommate and I bumped into Burt at One Fish Two Fish on Madison Ave, which he frequents often. It was there he proceeded to drink past us like a champ.
Mike Tyson - A week after he was released from jail, my party of 7 Koreans passed by his table at the Pancake House in DC. As we passed, he mouthed off silently the words, "ching chong". Since then, I have rooted hard against him in the ring. What a loser!
Bert Sugar - Bumped into him at an Irish bar by Grand Central Station.
Max Kellerman - Hummer and I standing behind him at a taxi stand @ Newark airport. Apparently we were both on the same flight back from Las Vegas.
