Last week I went to the Tavistock Cup. What's that?! It's an exclusive golf tournament for members of Isleworth CC and Lake Nona CC -- the clubs where Tiger and Ernie Els belongs. It's a 2 day event between the two country clubs and represented by professionals that belong to those clubs. It's a rather neat and very well organized event. Neat because it's a private event and it's for pride. So Tiger Woods, Ernie Els, Retief Goosen, Chris DiMarco, Annika Sorenstan, Paula Creamer and others compete for pride and for charity. There's really no ropes so I ended up walking with Tiger on the fairway, and stood next to him for most of the round. That's crazy because if you've ever gone to a professional golf tournament, you have no shot of getting near Tiger unless you're standing along the pathway from one hole to another. The whole day I was in hand shaking distance to Tiger! Unbelievable just from that standpoint. The other cool thing was that half the people there were members of the CC so the professionals knew a good number of the attendees so there was actual chit chatting here and there with the attendees. You'd never see that at a regular tournament. The other (that's me) were invited guests of the members or sponsors.
Along the way, I found myself standing next to Chris Tucker - Jackie Chan's partner in the Rush Hour series. Chris was a cool guy and a gentlemen. We chatted for about 10 mins or two holes as we followed Tiger. He's a huge Tiger fan. He was just like anybody else in the crowd, walking with him and trying to situate himself in the right place around the greens. What did we talk about? Just guy talk. "Do you think he's going to make this?" "OH yeah, this is home course. Tiger makes all these putts." By the 18th hole, I saw Ricky Running Watters - ex 49er and Eagle running back. He was decked out in a silk Asian robe - he's a member of Isleworth and lives in the community.
It was a fun event and you had to wear either red or blue to support the country club: Lake Nona or Isleworth. The event is first class, yet relaxed. I was probably the ONLY Korean person there. I can count the number of Asians on one hand who were present. I bring this up because no one recognized Chris Tucker because his movie is not the demographic of the majority in attendance. Btw, I wore blue because I was a guest of someone who is friends with Retief, who belongs to Lake Nona. The players were so chill when you met them. They joked around and were nice to everyone. I would say this event was much more enjoyable than a regular golf tournament because the players are very accessible and talkative, and there are less people in attendance. To be able to walk with Tiger on the fairway is simply amazing.
