The NBA in LA LA Land

I'm out here in sunny and warm LA. I've been here since Friday evening where I went directly to an In and Out right after I got off the plane. It's been a full and eventful weekend, but I'm now in work mode with our annual offsite ready to go. I'm at the Ritz Carlton and I noticed that very large men were roaming the lobby. It became apparent to me that it was the Phoenix Suns as Steve Nash walked by me late this AM. I saw the other players walking to the bus with clothes in those netted gym/laundry bags.

It's been a basketball type of weekend during what should be a football weekend with the playoffs going on. Last night I met up with the Konman to catch up on old times. With the writer's strike going on, there's not much to do except go on commercial auditions which is not effected by the strike. He asked if I wanted to go watch a celebrity basketball game, so I assumed it was some fundraiser. We drove up to a high school and had to check in. Luckily, we were guests of one of the celeb players b/c the Konman is good friends with him. I then learned that it wasn't a celebrity basketball game per se; it was a celebrity/entertainment basketball league that's played in private. We walk in and it was like walking into a high school game. Konman noticed the wife of one of the players and we situated ourselves next to her and I introduced myself to the entourage. Sitting next to me was Sam Cassell of the Clippers who dropped by to watch the game. What's very interesting is that it's sponsored by the NBA and the players actually wore official NBA apparel: Suns, Bucks, Bulls, etc. As I watched the games, I noticed a handful of familiar faces. No on real famous was there; it was a lot of character actors and studio folks playing. Konman would point out someone and tell me who that person was and I would say, "oh yeah." Konman was at the games last week and told me that Will Ferrell walked in on the games to watch after his soccer game. There's an astroturf field outside and I guess there's also a soccer league as well b/c Will came in with some shin guards. Konman described him as a very large man.

It was actually entertaining to watch the games. I would have to say that my old Chelsea Piers league had more talent and better basketball skills, but they play equally as hard in the NBAE (NBA Entertainment League). While there, we met Michael Clark Duncan. He is one large dude and kinda rumbles down court and takes up a lot of space in the paint. However, he's not the most agile guy down low. He was nice to us and when I said "nice game," he responded with "Thanks" and slapped his hand against my chest. That hurt.

The previous night, I saw MCD at the Clippers game. We had VIP seats -- purple seats -- at the Staples Center. MCD had center court seats with his girl. I guess Jack Nicholson goes to Lakers games, and MCD goes to root for the Clips. The Clippers played the Dallas Mavericks and played them well. They lead the whole game until Jerry Stackhouse's 3 point buzzer beater. What a way to lose a game.
