This past weekend was the annual guy golfing get together in colonial Williamsburg, VA. Last year we were in Myrtle Beach. I had never been to Williamsburg but it reminded me of the fact that I can't live in the south. I know it's only Virginia but when half the cars down there are pick up trucks and you see a sticker that says "stop illegal immigrants," you know it's Bush country. That is not an indication of my political siding but an observation that the folks below DC aren't to warm to my kind.
This is the annual golf weekend with fellas I had met during my college days, though we didn't all go to the same college. Everyone is married but me and a few of the guys have kids already. Man we're getting old. I look forward to this weekend and as usual, it was a lot of fun. There's not much to do in Williamsburg after the sun goes down, but poker and laughs kept us entertained. The golfing was a lot of fun and I think I've got the golf itch again. I played fairly well and ended up with the overall low score after 4 rounds of golf. The one shot that I'll remember for the rest of my life will be the 18th hole which was the 72nd hole of the weekend at Royal New Kent. It was the final hole of the weekend and I was about 152 yards out from an island green. I selected my iron and said to my playing partner, "sometimes you just gotta go for it (at the pin)." I was playing a 10 yard fade - a balls flight which goes left to right - all day. I aimed left 10 yards of the pin, which was tucked to the right by the water. Soon as I made contact with the ball, I knew I had hit it pure but was it going to fade 10 yards? I lost sight of the ball as it descended towards the island green. Up above the hole was the clubhouse with about 10 guys having beers and watching play on the final hole. The next thing I hear is a roar from the beer gallery. The ball landed 6" from the hole with no spin. Just a dead drop on the island green. As I walked on the green, I heard someone from the peanut gallery say "wave your hat" and "pick it up." That was a nice way to end a great weekend with the fellas.
