The HBO special 24/7 was one of the best documentaries I've seen in a long time, and it was also pure marketing genius. 24/7 is a behind the scenes look into the lives and training of Oscar De La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather Jr. I'm a distant observer of the violent but legal sport called boxing, and I barely knew of their boxing bout on May 5th. It was brilliant showing the 4 part series after Entourage: a testosterone driven show. As a result of this series, everyone appeared to be interested in this PPV fight. I had a bday party to go to but the fight came first and it was pretty good. I believe the outcome of the fight was right with Floyd winning, but I did NOT want him to win. The fight of the year or the decade as some referred to it did live up to almost all the hype, but without a knockout. The hype included the presence of celebrities which validated the bout's stature. Sitting around the ring were Jack Nicholson, Matthew McConaughey, Toby Maguire, Leonardo DiCaprio, Tony Lasorda, Marc Anthony, Magic Johnson, P. Diddy, Michael Jordan, and a host of others. Even 50 cent marched in with Mayweather Jr. and rapped the introductory song for Floyd. Had it not been this series, I wouldn't thought much of it nor do I think many around the country would have. In the end, though De La Hoya lost, he made at least $25M and Floyd the winner gets only $10M. It must be awesome losing and getting 2.5x more.
