First dates in NYC

In the spirit of Valentine's week, I will share with you my first dates in NYC. If you remember Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks in "You've got mail," they have an awkward encounter at the well-known Cafe Lalo, which is located on the Upper West Side. Unlike the movie, it's very busy and well lit with a mix of Columbia students and neighborhood folks encroaching on your personal space.

Technically, this wasn't a first date according to the person I had dessert with there, but in my mind, it was our first date. What I remember the most is the non-stop laughter, but no need to worry about laughing out too loud because there's enough noise to drown you out there. Laughter is definitely one of the most important elements in a relationship. If you can't laugh, or make the other person laugh, then you're in trouble. I remember how we were never concerned with time and the night kept going and going. I felt bad for the waitress because we ordered a couple of desserts and Cappuccino, which lasted us for hours. Cafe Lalo was the starting point of our many encounters on the Upper West Side. We would meet at other cafe's like Cafe Mozart, Edgar's Cafe and others. I haven't been back to those places in years, but it brings back great memories.
