The alcohol consumption in NYC has to be 2-3x more than any other city in America. Here are the basic reasons (that I believe) Noo Yawkers drink heavily.
1) Taxis - there is no driving so no worries about a DUI or driving intoxicated
2) Bars and lounges are the social environment and not people's small apartments
3) Stressed out and long hours at work
4) What else are you going to do when you're bored
5) Wine Bars popping up everywhere
6) There's a bar on every city block
