Do you remember the Steve Martin film from the early 90s, LA Story? It was a satirical look at life in LA. I should really title this blog entry, lost outside of NYC which will make me look like a NY snob but that's not what I'm striving for here. I landed late last night and was unable to meet up with any friends so I headed straight for the hotel and I was starving. So I'm traveling around 9pm and there's traffic on 405! I tried finding some good tunes and half the stations were in spanish. I'm somewhere in the valley I think, or near Malibu because I saw Pepperdine University -- I actually have no idea where I am. I missed the entrance to the hotel and decided to go find a place to eat instead of settling for the hotel fare. All I could find was a mall with the following options: Applebees, Chilis & Macaroni Grill. The only time I'm reminded of these franchises is when I walk in Times Square and when I leave NYC. America is the land of franchises and supersized people. I decided on Macaroni Grill after circling around town to find a non-franchise option that was open. I walked in at 9:30pm and the Macaroni Grill was already cleaning up, so I asked if the kitchen was open and they said I had 30 mins left. Oh dear! I quickly ordered an appetizer which could've fed 4 people and the lasagna which was presented too perfectly. Even the parsley was too perfectly placed. The food taste didn't come remotely close to what I had in Italy this summer nor the local trattoria on my block in Chelsea. However, I have to say the service and the manager were superfriendly which is something you consistently do not get in NYC. Oh, and the free refills is something else NYC has to adopt.
